Obama, Oh My
April 11th, 2008
This one is going to leave a mark.
Obama, reportedly said this at a San Francisco fundraiser, explaining why people in Middle America are not liberal on issues like illegal immigration and cultural values:
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,” Obama said. “And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Translation: Small town folk and Midwesterners are culturally conservative (which apparently he also equates to uncaring Xenophobes) because we are bitter and merely looking for someone to blame for our lot in life. Liberals=Enlightened, Thoughtful; Conservatives=Lacking the capacity to engage in critical thinking, Reactionary.
If he actually said this condescending, elitist claptrap it will take all his vast rhetorical skills to talk himself out of the firestorm heading his way.
And not because us rubes are going to merely cling to our guns and our religion.
But rather, because he just insulted the largest block of swing voters in America.
Smooth move, BHO.

Obama is really a lightweight. Is he able to operate outside stereotypes?
He is still better than the cintons, but he is a big city rube if there ever was one.

A lot of pundits have noticed that Obama is ‘the candidate of the wine-and-brie crowd’ and that he is blowing off the “old labor” group–not to mention centrist Christians–with his rhetoric.
Barone calls it the “Jackson/Academics” divide:
