Holloway, Broderick Again Pushing for Milwaukee County Board Pay Hike
October 31st, 2007

Just moments ago during the meeting of the Milwaukee County Board’s Finance and Audit Committee, embattled Board Chair Lee
Holloway and Supervisor Gerry Broderick announced their proposal to raise the pay of County Supervisors.
We’ve detailed their past efforts at length here at Dailytakes.
They’ve waited til nearly the last minute to try to slip in an unwarranted pay increase after receiving a lot of heat when their intentions were brought to light previously.
No supervisor should vote yes on their proposal. And no supervisor should vote for a budget that increases their salary.
What can you do?
Act NOW.
The number at the switchboard at the County board is 414-278-4222. Politely give them your address and ask to be transferred to your Supervisor (you’ll likely get an aide or voice mail). Their email addresses can be found here if you prefer to get it in writing.
Request that: 1) They please vote no on the pay raise amendment. 2) If the pay raise is a part of the budget, that they then vote no on the budget.
Sneaky, but not surprising move on their part.
More details as this develops, but don’t wait to call if you live in Milwaukee County.
***UPDATE***
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has now also posted a brief post about the last minute attempt to hike their pay.
The $156-a-month raise would take effect in April and boost 2008 supervisor pay to about $52,080. The increase would bring the 19 County Board members’ annual pay to $52,704 starting in 2009.
Supervisors Elizabeth Coggs-Jones, Gerry Broderick, Michael Mayo Sr., Willie Johnson Jr., Peggy West and Roger Quindel voted for the raise. Supervisor Richard Nyklewicz Jr. voted against it.
It marks the third attempt at advancing a supervisor pay increase this year. The first was withdrawn by its author, Supervisor Jim “Luigi” Schmitt, after criticism from the public. The second, by County Board Chairman Lee Holloway, was included in the board’s 2008 budget request. But County Executive Scott Walker deleted it.

Already emailed Joe Rice…..

[…] Brian Fraley has the details, but the short story is, earlier this morning, The Slumlord (County Board Chair Lee Holloway) and Supervisor Gerry Broderick have slipped in a pay increase for the board, something they have tried to do in the past. We need to put an end to this last minute attempt by the already bloated and under-worked county board. […]

I emailed Borkowski… we’ll see if I get any sort of response

I have received a response from Sup. Rice….
“I have previously expressed my opposition to a pay raise for supervisors. Given the present level of responsibilities, the compensation and benefits are more than adequate.”
“I plan to oppose this 11th-hour amendment. While I must reserve judgement on the budget as a whole until it is completed, the presence of a salary increase in the document would cause me to have serious reservations about voting to approve.”
Glad to hear MY supervisor is sticking up for us us in District 6….

You may be satisfied with that response, Pete, but I am not.
It’s a cop out the rest of the board can take, too.
I didn’t like the raise, but…
They need to tell the Chairman “If you want my vote for this budget, you’ll have to remove the pay raise.”
It’s that clear cut.

I contacted DeBruin’s office. I was told that she does NOT support a pay raise and will not be voting for one. (she was unavailable)

I emailed Holloway about 6 times since the last time this came up. Never received a response. I emailed him again today. I’m not holding my breath.

[…] After Brian Fraley raised the red flag on Lee Holloway’s latest attempt to milk more money out of the system, I decided to ask my Supervisor, Paul Cesarz, what he plans to do. There should be no surprise as to the response: Steve: […]
