A Hoy Hoy,

Endorsements are most effective at the end and the beginning of political campaigns. Right before elections, endorsements push undecideds off the fence and alleviate hesitations caused by “contrast” (aka negative) ads. At the beginning of a campaign, the right endorsement can direct money and cause a bandwagon effect.

So far this Presidential election, there have been very few big endorsements coming out of Wisconsin Republicans. Camille Solberg has endorsed Romney. John Hammes is McCain’s WI finance director The two biggest names in WI GOP politics, MKE CE Walker and WI AG Van Hollen, are being loyal soldiers by getting behind Tommy Thompson.

I asked my friends in the chattering class for the most influential names in Wisconsin GOP/conservative politics, and narrowed that list down to the top ten. Which of the following uncommitted GOP/conservative heavy hitters’ endorsement would push you to support a GOP presidential candidate? Before you jump all over me, I have excluded Reince Priebus and Mark Green. Due to their leadership in the WISGOP, I cannot think of a scenario whereby they would get involved in a presidential campaign this early:

The support of Glen Grothman is the gold standard in the pro-life movement.

  2. rita Says:

There is no way Step and Farrow should be on this list above Leah V.

Owen is a good choice, but number 2 among the Repub. netroots is Frank Lasee. His Lasee notes are te gospal among many.

With the current list of Republican candidates for President, I’m not sure anyone could say anything to me to get me excited.

Brownback - Qualified, conservative, no mojo.
    Gilmore - Who?
    Giuliani - He’s a Democrat. (Pro-abortion/pro-gay rights/anti-gun.)
Huckabee - Qualified, conservative, but mojo lacking here too.
    Hunter - Who?
McCain - Straight Talk - what? Where’d that go?
Paul - Interesting guy. Not sure if he’s qualified, definately no mojo here.
    Romney - Excellence in mediocrity.
Tancredo - Nice fighting words, some mojo, not going to make it.
Tommy Thompson - Gotta rework that strategy in Iowa now. Wondering if the change in ship is going to make the difference. But, still, not good at debates, hasn’t presented well.
Fred Thompson - Expectations very high, too soon to see if he’s what we need.

I second Dad29’s nomination for “none” and “none of the above.”

All will support the eventual nominee and it is unlikely there will be one or two candidates on either side by the now relatively late time of the Wisconsin presidential preference primary.

Here’s a political trivia question: Which states elect a Governor in 2007?

  8. Pug J Says:

MGM, you took a future trivia question I was going to use = MS, KY and LA. Looks like I win a Tommy Thompson for president!

  9. Josh Schroeder Says:

I will influence my decision on who to vote for in ‘08.
