Today is a Great Day

May 2nd, 2011

There is absolutely no doubt about it, it is a great day.

A great day to be an American. A great day to be alive.

There will be a time and place for the usual political debates. But not here. Not now. I will pity those who spend today trying to leverage this to their advantage.

God bless our Commander in Chief, President Obama. As I wrote to friends last night, I won’t ever vote for him, but I will and did crack open a beer in his honor. The Red and Blue in the American Flag are not symbols for the two major political parties, folks. The GOP didn’t get attacked on 9/11/01 and the Democrats didn’t win on 5/1/11.

Blessings as well to his predecessor, George W. Bush who proclaimed, “We will not tire. We will not falter. We will not fail.”

Of course today, as every day, we are all in debt to the men and women who serve this country in her armed forces and intelligence gathering operations.

As the New York Post proclaimed online last night: We Got the Bastard!

Bin Laden’s death does not mark the end of the war on terror, not even the beginning of the end. Rather, May 1, 2011 marks the end of the beginning of our war against radical Islamists.

While there have been times that even I have doubted whether the American people had the stomach to continue the fight, clearly the American military is somewhat immune to the ebb and flow of public opinion. Thank heavens for that.

The world may not be a safer place with Bin Laden dead. But it surely is a better place.

Is this cathartic? Yes. Symbolic? Sure. But it’s so much more than that.

We got the bastard!
