Long Lives the King

April 22nd, 2008

Why is Lee Holloway still the chairman of the Milwaukee County Board? After years of this ethics problems, physical bullying, and the revelation that he and his wife are what many consider to be slumlords, why does he still maintain power?

Because twelve individuals on the County Board would prefer to be recipients of his patronage, than be led by Luigi Schmitt, who is known by every last person in that Courthouse as one of the most decent, ethical public officials in the state. (Hint: Look for Gerry Broderick to be named Finance Chair soon).

Here are the twelve people who put their faith in Lee Holloway. The twelve Supervisors who believe Lee Holloway is the right person to lead them. The twelve individuals who, by their actions, have given their blessing to Holloway’s ethics and methods. Here they are, the dirty dozen, if you will:

  1. Gerry Broderick
  2. Toni Clark
  3. Elizabeth Coggs-Jones
  4. Marina Dimitrijevic
  5. Lee Holloway (Obviously)
  6. Willie Johnson Jr.
  7. Christopher Larson
  8. Theo Lipscomb
  9. Michael Mayo Sr.
  10. John Thomas
  11. John Weishan Jr.
  12. Peggy West

Luigi Schmitt and I disagree on policy issues. He is neither as conservative nor as vocal as I wish my Supervisor to be. But he would have made an outstanding County Board Chair. He would have instantly elevated the stature of that body, and would have served as an able leader who could have ushered in a new era of ethical conduct.

But the dirty dozen didn’t want that.

They wanted the goodies that Holloway will soon be dishing out, regardless the cost.

I’ve long said these following two points. But putting them together has never been so appropriate.

1. The Milwaukee County Board is a circus.

2. Clowns scare me.
